报告介绍

Superconductivity in compressed superhydrides near room temperature shows

the potential of strong phonon-mediated pairing, but the required pressures

limit practical use. Unconventional superconductors offer another route

to improved transition temperatures, critical currents, and magnetic-field

performance by exploiting strong electronic interactions associated with

magnetism. However, these materials are rare and are often found only

within a narrow parameter range near the onset of magnetic order. Guided

by this principle, the Quantum Matter group has discovered superconductivity

in several compounds, including CePd2Si2, Celn3, CeNi2Ge2, UGe2, YFe2Ge2,

LuFe2Ge2, and high-pressure CeSb2. Although disorder, structural transitions,

and orbital and charge effects complicate the search, they also provide

useful ways to tune material properties. Combining physical guiding principles

with computational modelling could therefore accelerate the discovery

of technologically useful superconductors.

Prof. F. Malte Grosche is a professor of condensed matter physics at the

Cavendish laboratory of the University of Cambridge, as well as being

a fellow and Director of studies at Trinity College in Cambridge. After

obtaining his undergraduate and PhD degrees from Cambridge, he went on

to be a Trinity College Title A fellow from 1994 to 1997 and then was

a postdoctorate at the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids

in Dresden until 2001. Following this he spent 6 years at Royal Holloway

as a lecturer and a reader, before coming back to Cambridge and rejoining

the Cavendish in 2007.
